Apiti Notes
» [from our own correspondent. "J Nearly the whole of the timber for the school at Apiti is on the ground, and Mr Batchelor will soon be at work on the building. The timber is from the Kiwitea mill of Mr John Bartholomew. The brickmaker at Apiti, Mr Alexander Dick, has succeeded in making serviceable bricks, and his first kiln has already been disposed of. Bricks for the second kiln are now being made, and the latter are already ordered. Mr Louis Holden is building a substantial and commodious house on his section at Apiti, to be used by his employes on the farm. If the number of people who have hjeen inspecting the land to be sold at Coal Creek may be accepted as a criterion, the competition for the several sections ought to be very keen. A blight has appeared about Apiti, which attacks potatoes and onions. It is apparently a fungus, not unlike the woolly blight which appears on apple trees, only there is no insect. When examined under a microscope it is very like a tree or shrub on a very minute scale. When attacked, the plants rot away, and in the case of potatoes the haulm dies and the tubers rot away. The same blight appeared at Awahuri about two years ago. Messrs Ashcroft and Low, Government surveyors, have succeeded in cutting a road line between the Marton and Feilding Special Settlement Blocks. The grade is good, but there will be a few rather deep cuttings to make.
