During a discussion in the House of Commons on the War Estimates, Mr E. Stanhope, Secretary of State for the War Department, mentioned that the trial of smokeless powder had been attended with success, and the whole of the forces were to be armed with modern weapons. The defence, he said, of coaling stations was practically completed, and submarine mines provided throughout the Empire afforded an effective defence, which could be increased on short notice. He also stated that comforts of new barracks would tend to induce the enlistment of recruits. The following are the names of the team selected to fire at Palmerston on the 17th instant : — Lieut. Bray, Sergt. Evans, Vols. Stevens, Saywell, Parker, Hopkins, Scott, Lethbridge, Evans, junr. Petherick, Dougherty; emergencies, Aitken, and Bassett. The following are total scores for the first, second, and final competitions for Doctor Charlton's medal : — Private Stevena (scr), 198 ; Private Parker (scr), 188 ; Private Hopkins (24 points), 183 ; Private Say well (scr), 182; Private Petherick (22 points), 178; Private Dougherty, (16 points), 167; Private E vans, junn (6points), 166 ; Private Humphrey (50 points), 102 ; Private Bassett (scr), 83. The total scores made up to the present for B. and C. classes are as follows J— B— Private Hopkins, 159; Private Petherick, 156 ; Private Dougherty, 151 ; Private Humphrey, 52 ; Henson, 49. C— Private Feck, 129; Private BattershiU, 98 ; Boyd, 88 ; Taylor, 73 ; Wigg, 55; Belfit, 49; Gould, 48. There will be two more competitions tor B. and 0. classes, of which due notice will be given.
