The Chamber of Commerce advocates the establishment of a Labour Bureau for England. The Dockers' Union has resolved to oppose all pension schemes on the ground that; it is unjust to tax wages. Mr Atkinson, a member of the House of Commons, who has made himself notorious lately by his violent language and behavior, both in and out of the House, is now confined in a lunatic asylum at Nice. The minerß of Flintshire have refused to join the strike. Lord Hamilton stated in the House the na^al construction estimates would be limited this year to building three men of war and ten torpedo boats. The German commercial treaties apply to the British colonies under the most favored nation clause. Mrs Osbone pleaded guilty to a charge of perjury, and was sentenced to nine months' hard labor. Mrs Hargreaves appealed to the judge, on behalf of her former friend, for mercy. Snowstorms have been raging in England. The British steamer Messina foundered in the Gulf of Gascony, and 25 lives were lost. Ottawa, March 9. The Quebec elections have resulted in the return of 54 Conservatives and 19 of Mercier's partisans. Mercier himself was elected, but warrants are issued for the arrest of both himself and the other members of his cabinet in connection with the recent scandal. Mercier will be expelled from the Legislature. Washington, March 9. The Behring Sea treaty has been submitted to the senate, where it received severe criticism, and was referred to a committee. The Government has replied to Lord Salisbury insisting on the renewal of the modus vivendi. News from South America reports an outbreak of Indians has occurred in Bolivia. They were assaulted by the troops and defeated with great slaughter, a thousand being killed. Rome, March 9. A hundred and thirty-eight members of the infamous Malavitu Society were arrested in Otronto. Athens, March 9. The Montenegrins attacked an Albanian wedding procession on the frontier, killing and wounding 19 persons. Sydney, This Day. The drought is assuming serious proportions in the West country, and round Willamua it is worse than the drought of 1888. On account of the devastation caused by rabbits, chaff is selling at .£ls per ton, Melbourne, This Day. The potato crops in the North West district have been attacked by a grub, which in many instances destroyed the whole crop. Marton, This Day. An unmarried man named Hickey was killed yesterday afternoon on the Rangitira Railway contract by a fall of earth. Woodville, This Day. The copper lode at Maharahara mine seems rich with stone (?). Eleven feet have been driven without getting through. Yesterday very rich specimens were brought to town to be sent to Wellington to be assayed. Wellington, This Day. The trial of Smith and Harrison for the murder of Dalton, at Eketahuna, began this morning, and is expected to last oyer to-morrow. Auckland. This Day. At the Supreme Court, Etheridge, late Receiver of Land Revenue, pleaded guilty to a charge of fraudulent appropriation of money, and was sentenced to four years' penal servitude. A nolle proaequi was entered on the other charges.
