Writing to the Contemporary Renew Sir Henry Parkes says tbat the Labour Party in the New South Wales Parliament is demoralised and shattered under the tutelage of the Protectionists, and the Party, as it was understood al the time of the general elections, no longer exists in the House. Before the Royal Commission on Labour, Mr S Plimsoll, President of the Seamen's Union, gave eyidence of a sensntional character regarding dock loading of ocean going vessels. He also declared that the food supplied to sailors on board some ship 3 was unfit for consumption, and that in the case of ' ocean tramps,' not only was the food bad, but fraudulent insurances were very often effected on both vessel and cargo. Tom McCarthy, of tbe Dockers' Union, also gave evidence of an imporant nature, in the course of which he assured the Commission that if the introduction of the eight hours' principle failed to absorb the unemployed the Labour Party would use every endeavour to have the length of a day's work reduced to six, four, or even two hours if necessary. Hong Kong, January 27. A Chinese Brigadier, while reviewing the troops of Icbang, kept a battery turned on the British gunboat Esk, and so menacing was his attitude that the commander of the vessel remonstrated with him through the British Consul, Beblin, January 29. Prussia has refused to re- admit the Jesuits into the country. Excited debates have taken place in Ihe Prussian Diet on the Education Bill, which, if passed, the Goyernment propose to use as a weapon against the spread of Atheism. The National Liberals and Radicals are opposed to tlie measure. Count Capriyi, the Imperial Chancellor made a powerful speech in support of the Bill. Ho was loudly nissed on resuming his seat, whereupon the Ministers withdrew from the Chamber, and the sitting of the Diet was brought to an abrupt termination. Rome, January 29, A semi-official announcement states that the Pope is overworked, but his health is fairly good.
