He was well known in the New Zealand steam trade. In their first innings Lord Sheffield's team put together 306. Dr Grace, one of the not out men of the previous day, only added one to his score, making a total ot 26. Abel, who had 15 to his credit when the stumps were drawn on Friday, carried his bat out for 132. The other principal scores were Sharpe 26, Stoddart 27, Briggs 28. Turner took 2 wickets for 90, McLeod 2 for 45, Trott, 2 for 42, Giffen 4 for 88.
