James Sierck, a labourer on the Otago Central Railway, near Taieri Lake station, committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor at 11 o'clock last night. Deceased appeared to have suffered great pain internally, and had expressed a wish that God would take his life. While being attended to by his mates last night he seized a razor and cut his throat, pointing to that part of his body where the pain was. Death was almost instantaneous. Deceased was married, and was a native of Sweden, about 47 years of age, and had been in the Colony some 20 years. He had no children. His wife resides at Balfour, Southland. Auckland, February 1* Arrived, Monowai, R.M.S.. from San Francisco. An elderly man, whose name is not known, was lying on the Epsom tram line to-night, when a car ran into him, fracturing his skull, and almost tearing off one of his legs. Ho was taken to the Hospital, where he died. Manaia, February 1. On Sunday afternoon, W. J. Weyburn was attacked by a man whose name he has given as John Kearin, and badly beaten with a heavy stick. A third person came up as Wey bourn was becoming unconscious, and frightened his assailant away. Weybourn has just bought Kearin's farm. A warrant is out for Kearin's arrest.
