Meeting at Colyton

-♦ [from our own correspondent. I There was a meeting in the Colyton Hall, Taonui road, on Saturday afternoon, for the purpose of receiving the names of applicants for the 4000 acres of the Pohangina Small Farm Association, north of the Oroua, and also for the Onslow Block of 11,000 acres. This 15,000 acres is the remaining portion of the 36,000 acres allotted to Messrs Hughey and Whibley for the Small Farm Associations under their care. Forty-five attended the meeting, either personally or by proxy. Mr F. Duckworth, of Cheltenham, and eleven others had undertaken to have the Pohangina Block north of the Oroua inspected in readiness for a report to be given in at this meeting. Two competent men had been sent by them, Messrs Laydon and Barnes, who were absent three days. They reported the block to be easy of access through the Pemberton Block, which is about three miles distant from the boundary of the Pohangina Small Farm Association, and that the soil was good, covered with a light scrubby bush, and well adapted to sheep grazing. They considered the conntry to be as good as that around Pemberton. They further reported that abont 1000 acres on the west of the block and adjoining the Oroua was too broken for 200-ftcro sections and recommended that it should be made into one or more small runs. A resolution was passed by the meeting instructing the secretary to write to the Surveyor-General requesting this alteration in the boundary to be made. Fifte*en of those who stood first on the list of names then took up the block and paid their entrance fee. Ifc was not considered necessary to nominate a committee for this block, as it could be worked with the next one. Mr Hughey was elected chairman, and Mr F. W. Whibley secretary and treasurer. A resolution was then passed that the Government registration fee of 10s be paid to the secretary noi later than January 31, or members names would be struck off. The question of drawing sections next cropped up. Mr Martin proposed, " That families or friends be allowed to draw on one ticket for sections," seconded by Mr T. James. Mr Woolford, as an amendment, proposed, " That each should draw separately," seconded by Mr Adsett. On being put to the yote the amendment was lost. These associations will accordingly do as the others — draw together. Tho remainder present, namely, 35 then took up the Onslow Block situated to the north of tho Oroua and bounded on the West by the Marton Small Farm Association. Access will he through the Marton Block in the direction of Pemberton. It was not considered necessary to inspect this block, it being close to the Marton on the one side and the Pohangina on the ether, that it was concluded it is about the same style of country. Many of the selectors are people w-ho live in that part of the country, and consequently should know it. The following were elected to sei ye as committee men :— Messrs George Adsett, W. H. Poad, G. Cowan, W. Edgar, R. Robinson, C. Cowan, G. Day, E. Donnelly, J. Rugsted ; Mr D. Hughey, Chairman ; Mr F. W. Whibley, Secretary and Treasurer. Tho next meeting will be at Colyton Lull on Saturday, January 31, at 3 p.m. to reoeiyo entrance fess then unpaid and Government registration fee. About 20 names can bo rncoived. Several of these are on the way, but could not get to the meeting. Preliminary expenses (£ll 10s) were authorised to be paid. The meeting then adjourned.
