Stewart, a baker, living on the Mount Eden road, died suddenly to-day. His death is believed to have been caused by heart disease. Stewart leaves a widow and family. When riding in Symond streeet on Wednesday night a man named William Finlay, a baker, living at Archhill, was thrown on to his head in the roadway by his horse stumbling, and is now in a yery critical state at the hospital, The chess scores of the competitors for the championship are now as follows : — Siedeberg, six wins, one draw, no losses ; Littlejohn, five wins, one draw, no losses ; Bakewell, four wins, three draws, no losses ; Hookham, three wins, one draw, four losses ; Barnes, three wins, no draw, foiu losses ; Jowitt, two wins, one draw, five losses ; Ashton, one win, one draw, fiye losses ; Trimble, no wins, two draws five losses. The play iov the championship has now resolved itself into a contest between Sideberg and Littlejohn.
