A Good Story

♦■ The Hawke's Bay Herald tells a good story of how a wicked sailor-man was circumvented. He was master of a ship and he had a siok sailor whom he wished to leave behind as a legacy for the Napier ratepayers. His scheme "got wind," and when the " used up shell back " was landed on the beach a " burly bobby " placed him back in the ship's boat. The skipper accepted the position, apparently, and started his boat back to the ship, but the Sergt. of the Police was not deceived, and he saw that as soon as the boat got into the tideway it was allowed to drift back towards the Spit bridge. Thereupon the Sergt. taking with him Constable Harvey, jumped into a cab and drove quickly over to the Western Spit, reaching Northey's slip just as the sailor was put ashore there, the man being collared before he had made a score of steps on terra firma. Tfci© Serfjt. called upon tlie boat to COme back and t^e the man, but the order was given,' :? pulf awayladg,!' and the Cantor's boat started for the ship. Captain Kraeft, in charge of the pilot boat, here '! happened alqng," and upon being hailed took pff ttie Sergt! the Constable and the sailor! there was a chase. The pilot boat's crew ppoyed the better, and so the Castor's boat was overhauled and the sailor placed in it. What followed is indescribable. The ship's boat dodged about awkwardly, as ship's boats do with a surf under the lee, with the pilot boat doing " sentry go." At last the wicked skipper got tired of the job and pulled to his ship. We pity the sick sailor-man.
