Destructive Fire at Palmerston

(PBB, PKEBS ASSOCIATION.) Palmeeston Nokth, This Day. A fire broke out at the east side of the Square, this morning at 3 o'clock in Peg den's furniture factory. The fire burned rapidly and despite the efforts of the brigade spread until the factory, Pedgens shop and dwelling, 1 c and and Co. grocers shop and dwelling, Hodgson's tinsmith shop and dwelling, and Wilson's Occidental Hotel were burnt to the ground. Crump's lawyer's office, and Moreland's fruit shop, were badly gutted. Some of the occupants escaped in their nightclothes with difficulty. Very little was saved. The total estimated damage is about £12,000. The Bank of New Zealand was charred and had a narrow escape. A high wind was raging at the time.
