The Borough Council will meet this evening. The Manchester Rifles will parade tonight in the Barracks at 7.30 sharp. The Bank of Australasia has opened a branch at Stratford. The English Bank of the River Plate has been ordered to be wound up. There is a marked demand for frontages in good situations m Feilding at the present time. The United States Government has warned the Jewish Society that they object to nn influx of Eus.sian refugees. The site formerly occupied by the Feilding Public Hall, has been purchased by a resident who proposes to build thereon at an early date. There is some talk of Mr Ballance being appointed to the Agent-Generalship. Whether this is true or not he is the best man in tho team for the position. The Maoris who went oa to the land at Coal Creek recently, have cleared out, but they intend to return when the potato planting season begins. Mr Samuel Storey, M.P., has commenced anaetwn against i he Sunderland Herald claiming £'10.000 damages for alleged libel. The French newspapers denounce, hut lhe Russian press favour, tlie proposed visit of the French squadron to England. Mr Shf-arer, undertaker, publishes a notioo in connection with tho funeral of the late Miss Emma Cobbe, whioh will take place to-morrow.
The St Kilda barquentine, is loading in Wanganui for Sydney. Mr H. Coles, piano tuner, adyertises that he will visit Mrs. Hastie's Feilding Hotel about August 12th. At Palmerston North on Tuesday, District Judge Kettle granted a new trial in the Foxton slander case of Fraser v. Iravie. The stone-laying ceremony in connec tion with the building of a new Salvation Army Barracks in Dunedin takes place on August Bth. The s.s. Duke of Sutherland has commenced to take in her cargo of frozen meat at Wanganui, and expects to get away on Saturday. The sil yer watch and gold chain advertised for in our last issue, was found and returned to ttus office by a member of the Salvation Army. We have to thank Mr F. Eawson, Socretary of the United Pastoralists Association, Brisbane, for a copy of a pamphlet on the Shearer's Strike of 1891. In order to keep pace with the expansion of his business, Mr Peter Thomson has added another room to his shop opposite the Feildh*tg Stab office. Mr Sogers who has been appointed Besidenfc Agent in Feildmg for the Government Insurance Department, has taken a house in Denbigh street, opposite the Brewery. The lifeless body of the j ounger Meikle who was one of the party lost at Kyeburn was found on Monday. Four < dogs were with him, one of them lying right across the body. The War Office at Home has sanctioned a team of fifty reserve soldiers tearing the United States and tlie Colonies for the purpose of taking part in military tournaments. There will be a meeting of the stewards of the Feilding Hunt Club, on Saturday, at the Feilding Hotel, at 7.30 p.m. and of the members of the Feildmg Club at 8 p.m. Punctuality in both cases is absolutely necessary. The annual meeting of the Manchester Horticultural Society will be held at the office of Mr E. Goodbehere, on Monday, the 10th inst at 8 p.m. The out-going committee are requested to attend at 7.30 p.m. The Gold Coinage Bill has passed through Committee in the House of Commons. The measure provides for the loss of three grain* in each com. Evidence taken before the Committee showed that many coins were lightened otherwise than by fair year. We regret to learn from the Chronicle that: — By reason of the inability of several of the Wanganui players to put in an appearance on Saturday, the match between the Wanganui Seniors and Feilding, has been postponed. It will be played later ou m the season. With reference to the marine monster alleged to haye been eeen by the offioer of the s.s. Rotomahana, it is quite possible that it was what is known among whalers as a thrasher. This fish is in the habit of rearing up out of the water in the manner described. Patrick Coyle, aged 74, employed at Napier, by the Maoris, was found dead, hanging by one of his feet, which had caught in the steps leading to the loft in a stable, where he slept. He was under the influence of liquor when seen on Saturday. Mr F. Caldwell, Viee*President of the local football club (says the Manawatu Times) bas expressed tis intention of presenting each member of the first, fifteen, in the event of their winning the next match with Feilding, with a football cap. By the Coptic, from London, there arrived Sergeant Richardson, It. A., lately stationed at Shoeburyness, who has come out lo New Zealand, under engagement with the Agent General, for the purpose of instructing the men engaged at the various fortifications in the colony. The Richmond brings news from Tahiti of the total wreck of the French despatch war vessel Volage, S(X) tons, at Morohou in Paunchta Group, on 10th July, She had 200 natives on board, besides M. La Carcade, Governor of Tahiti, but all got ashore safely. The vessel's hull was pierced by a coral reef. The Palmerston Football team take a licking hadly. The' committee of the club held a meeting on Monday night and decided to forward a protest to the Union against the Feilding Ciub, on the grounds that one of the players was not eligible to play in Saturday's match. The motto of the Palmerston Club is : "A win, a tie, or a wrangle." Mr David Christie Murray, who has just returned to London from Australia, has an article in the Contemporary Review on the Antipodean press, which he asserts is the best and noblest in the world. The principal newspapers published in Adelaide, Brisbane, and New Zealand are journals which Mr Murray considers no city in the world need be ashamed of. The death is announced to-day of Miss Emma Cohbe, the beloved sister of John Cobbe, of Feilding, which took place yesterday, after a long and painful illness which was borne with the utmost Christian fortitude. Mr Cobbe has the sympathy of many friends, by whom his late sister was held m the highest esteem. The funeral will leave tho late residence of the deceased lady at Makino, at noon, to-morrow. William Veekcr Bindon. commerci-il traveller, was arrested at Auckland on Tuesday on a charge of indecent assault on a girl under 14. The assault is alleged to have been committed in an un> occupied apartment of the Government Insurance .Building. The girl is respect able, and the daughter of a shopkeeper. Bindon was released on bail on his own recognisances of £100, and a surety for a like amount. He declares he never saw the girl in his life. The inquest of the late Mr J. Ffayhurst, who died in April, 1889, at Temuka, Timaru, and whose body was exhumed a fortnight ago, has concluded. The result of the post mortem fully confirmed the diagnosis of the medical attendant who certified that death was due to urge mea. and the analysis of the viscera gave only negative results, thrfonly substances found being bismuth, which had been administered to sop vomiting, and a mere (race of arsenic, winch is stated to be a common and harmless impurity in salts of b smuth.
