f The first shipment to England direct, now being made by the Wanganui Meal Freezing Company, is an event which 1 although of vast importance to the town of Wanganui as a potent factor in its , commercial prosperity, is of still greater consequence to stock farmers on the coasT, It is self-evident that, with buyers on each side of them, the latter will have direct incouragement to make their farms capable of carrying stock in the greatest possible numbers, and at the same time give the closest attention to breeding the best kinds of animals. Of course it is now tolerably well understood among practical farmers, that the best sheep for freezing are not by any means the best sheep for wool, and that in consequence of this destinction the time is not far distant when two separate classas will ha\ eto be bred. That is, however, : . a matter for consideration. We take it i that the Wanganui Freezing Company ■ ought to be able to buy better on '. this part of the coast, than any of the Wellington Companies, because of the smaller cost of railage. For instance, the distance by rail from Feilding to Wanganui is only 51 miles, while from Feilding to Wellington it is 100 miles, therefore, in this matter alone there is a difference large enough to mean a profit or a loss. To make the enterprise an 6iitire success, nothing more is needed than the exercise of ordinary business intelligence by those who have the direction of the affairs of the company, and from what we know of the men that is not likely to be wanting. In conclusion, we heartily congratulate Wanganui on the success already achieved in opening up the port. We have always contended that in their grand river the settlers had a mine of wealth, which only required developing to enrich, not only themselves, but assist in making the prosperity of the whole coast, and it is a positive pleasure to us to see our hopes in a fair way to be realised to their fullest extent.
