Volunteer Items
There was some good rifle practice^ at the ranges on Saturday last, and the young members are- making good progress. There will be a capitation parade* on Thursday next at the Barracks, at 7.30 p.m. Punctuality is-requested. All the belts and slings most be properly cleaned, and the arms in serviceableorder. When Volunteer Owen Pleasants,.* son of Captain Pleasants, was starting from Mangaone to attend the parade, held last Thursday, his horse played up because of the rifle which Mr Pleasants had in his hand, with the* result that he was thrown and sobadly hurt that he has been confined to his room for several days. Tbe Palmerston North Rifles have recruited up to the required strength, and are making good progress under the command of Lieut. Hall. The Mounted Rifles will be able to commence operations as soon as their uniforms are completed, A meeting of Wellington Volunteerswill be held shortly to consider the advisable ness of sending a New Zealand team to compete at the annual meeting of the New South WalesRifle Association in October next.
