RIVAL BRIDGE SITES ON THE UPPER RANGITIKEI.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — From a conversation with a thoroughly disinterested person, whose knowledge of the country is unsurpassed, I learn that the interest of the whole of the settlers from Feilding to Pernberton no less than that of the tradesmen of this place, lies in the upper sits being chosen for the bridge over the Rangitikei. To reach the central and lower sites the heavy watershed gullies must be crossed rendering those routes to Hunterville absolutely useless for heavy traffic, and only of service to the few settlers in the immediate vicinity, or to the Hunterville I tradesmen. The upper site, on the other hand, continues the Main Trunk road through from Feilding to Cheltenham, Kiwitea, Birmingham, Pernberton, and Murimutu — thus connecting this magnificent block with the Main Trunk Eailway by a grade, which is known to surveyors and travellers as phenomenal, it having in some instances perfectly straight runs of 20 miles at a time, with absolutely no bad grades or cuttings whatever. Eventually a line of coaches will run right through and will within a year go as far ai Pernberton, which lies 34 miles from Feilding. — I am, &c, Farmer. [The question of the rival sites will be , decided by the Government Engineer, Mr Cooke.— Ed. F.S.
