The Chrysanthemum show

The Manchester Horticultural Society are certainly to be congratulated on the success which attended their first Chryv santheinum Show, which; took place on Saturday : last.. in -the Assembly Rooms. The exhibits were not only numerous but of tjtie very best of their several kinds. They are said ; by persons competent to judge to have equalled, and iv some instances to have surpassed- those shown in "Wellington. ' That; might easily happen because, as the Judge, Mr Hunt, stated, the soil, atmosphere, and temperature in this district make a combination peculiarly suitable for. the culture of these beautiful plants. Where all were so good it might seem invidious to mention particular exhibits, but we only <lo justice to these known as the Empress of India and the Moonlight, when we say that it would be difficult to produce better. ••'" The anemonies were also very lovely, and •received much well-deserved favorable comment. A collection of chrysauthem urns sent by Major Gainpbell, of Avvahuri, for 1 exhibition only, was very much admired for the number and variety of the flowers. The single dahlias which are much the fashion just now, were good of their kind, but not so really, beautiful as the double. However, that is a matter of choice. There were two handsome devices shown, -a "Butterfly and a Harp, each was so perfect that the judge fou:)d "some difficulty in. giving his decision. The Table Decorations were particularly good ; great taste having been displayed in the selection of the flowers and their acljusDmeot. The attendance of the public was noc.so large as the occasion deserved, but that maybe v accounted for by the. fact that the weather was unfavorable and threatening. The following are the names of the exhibits and prize-takers. . Class I.- -Pot Grown Plants. . Best trained plant in the Show, to be selected from .all exhibits,— -Ist prize, 2s M, H.
