Football Notes
A meeting of the Manawatu Kugby Union was held at Donnelly's rooms on Saturday last. Messrs Jackson (Marton), Guy (Palmerston), Fowler and Saywell (Feilding), Moflat (Secretary) were present. Donations of £8 3s were received from Mr Lionel Abraham, the President of the Union and £1 Is each from Messrs W. Light and E. Seeker, vice-President. Three Clubs entered for the Senior Championship, viz., Marton, Palmerston, • . and Feilding, the matches to be played as under :— Marton v. Feilding. at Marton, on May 9th ; Palmerston v. Feilding, at Feilding, on May 30th ; Marton v. Palmerston, at' Mar ton, on June 20th; Feilding y. Marton, at Feilding, on July 11th; Feilding v. Palmerston, at Palmerston, on August Ist ; Marton v. Palmerston, at Palmerston, on August 22nd. Threee entries were received for the Junior Championship, but as it was considered probable that Bulls will join, matches were arranged for that Club in" anticipation of their playing in the Junior Matches. Following are the fixtures: — Palmerston v. Feilding, at Palmerston, on May 16th ; Bulls v. Feilding, at Feilding, on May 23rd ; Hunterville v. Palmerston, at Marton, on June 6th ; Bulls v. Hunterville, at Bulls, on June 13th ; Palmerston v. Bulls, at Palmerston, on June 27th ; Feilding v. Hunterville, at Marton, on July 16th; Palmerston v. Feilding, at Feilding, on August Bth ; Bulls v. Hunterville, at Marton, on August Bth ; Bulls v. Feilding, at Bulls, on August 29t!i; Hunteryille v. Palmerston, at Palmerston, on August 29th ; Feilding v. Hunterville, at Feilding, on September 12th ; Palmerston v. Bulls, at Bulls, on September 12th. In reference to the above fixtures I ' would remind all footballers, both senior and junior, that to enable Feilding to retain the laurels tb at have been won during the last three years, nothing but consistent practice and a close attention to the game will avert defeat, all the competing clubs are reported to be strong, in players. To pick the winners of the cups is rather a difficult task, but I pin my faith to the " Boys "to carry off the double. The practice on Saturday last was not what it should have been, talking and growling and- an entire indifference to the umpires being the order of the day ; the .Captain in my humble opinion,, as well-as some older players, should|set an example of temper to the younger members of the team and all should remember that football is not a game of brute and force, but skill and friendliness; it is a great pity to hear such remarks as " land him on his head," &c, from old players who should know better, and it also would be far better if several members could learn, to take a licking even in practice. I trust these few prehaps hard hits will be taken inthe spirit they are written and that at next Saturdays big practice, all disputes and petty grievances will be a thing of the past. Several men are showing excellent form this year, the most prominent being Alex. Stewart, Nicholson, Matravers aad C. Aitken amongst the forwards, and a new arrival m Feilding (Galway) will, with practice, deyelop into a first-class forward, his dribbling being specially noticeable ; Graham, who has attended practice regulary, will be amongst the firsts " with, practice." Palmerston beat a smart team from. Otaki and Ohau, by 11 points to 4, on Saturday. The Red Stars, of Feilding, beat the Excelsiors, (Palmerston), by one point to nil, on the same day. I clip the following from the Canterbury Times : — A novel football match was played ninety mil9s from Gisborne, the contestants being Maori teams and the stakes .£SO ; the winners to take ha f, the remainder to be given te the Church. After this, who dares to say we cannot serve God and Mammon. Twenty-Five.
