School Committee Election
There was only a moderate attendance ■ of householders at the school house last night, considering the importance of the occasion. The Mayor, Mr. W. G. Haybittle, was voted to the chair, after which the report and balance-sheet were readby Mr Watts, the Secretary, and adopted. The balance-sheet, which was for fifteen months, showed the committee started with £1 4s 5d in hand, . and had received ±'36 8s from the Education Board, and from parents £3 15s ( 3d, making, a total income of Ml 7s Bd/ The expenditure was for cleaning the school and out-build-ings Jb'2B 10s, fuel £2 18s repairs £1 9s 6d, printing ss, stationery £5, candles, &c, 6s 6d; leaving a balance of £2 18s 8d for the new committee. The report is as follows : — . " When your committee first took office the school was in a disorganised: state, owing to disagreements among the teachers, but with the arrival of the present headmaster this state of things disappeared. , r "The teaching staff now: connected with the school your, committee consider are giving every satisfaction, but they take - this opportunity to refer with regret to the loss sustained by the resignation of Miss Roache, who has been connected with the school for 10 years. : "Although the attendance has' somewhat increased of late, your committee would draw the attention of parents to •• the low average, it being the lowest of any large school in the Wanganui district. This, taken with the fact that education is free, your committee consider a blow on the district. Your committee has made -some efforts • ton renely this, and hope that those about to be elected will second this matter. In this connection it maybe as well to point out that information: has been received that there are childrenj in the district not attending any school. "The usual examination took place ins August, and Mr Inspector Bindon reports.the percentage of passes to be 86\ against • 68*6 last year, this, no doubt, is satisfactory. ; . / / ... . ';■■-■'-■-■■ " Your committee has been considerably embarrassed for want of funds, inasmuch as it has found a difficulty in supplying firewood in winter and making necessary repairs. Special efforts were made by providing the children with collecting cards; in this way was gathered £9 ss. ■ In addition, two concerts were got up through the kindness of Mrs Duncan, for . the scholars who passed in the standards. They each realised £10 5s and £9 ss. The cost of the additional playground was L 62 6s 6d. The Board contributing L4O and the committee L 23. " Your committee has asked the Board to enlarge the school residence, no school of its size (within the Board's district) having so small a - residence; but the Board refused to do any thing, and your committee hope their successors will be more fortunate. " The meetings of committee haye beenv fairly-well attended. "F. Y. Lethbridgb, Chairman." A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Edmund Goodbehere for auditing the'ac- ' counts, and the same compliment was- ae* corded to Mrs Duncan for her great kindness in organising and managing the very successful concerts 'by which the funds bad been raited topurchase a play ground.
