New Orleans Lynching Affair
(I'EIl UNITED P,RESS ASSOCIATION.) Washington, April 2. The withdrawal of the Italian Minister continues to create excitement here, and the United States Minister at Borne, acting under instructions from the Government, has requested the Italian Government to exercise patience in the matter,, and baa indicated to it the difficulty the Government of the United States encounters in arranging matters owing, to Louisiana estate rights. In discussing the withdrawal, the American press declare that Signor Rudini, the Italian Premier, is merely indulging in a little dramatic diplomacy, and that no real fear of war breaking out between the two countries need be felt in America. The rumour that a number of American visitors at Florence had been arrested, is not correct. Five of the Italians who were charged with being concerned in the murder of Detective Hennessey, have been released on. nominal bail by the authorities in Louisiuia, and it is understood .that those released were never placed on trial. President Harrison has assured the King of Italy that he deplores the. atrocious occurrence at New. Orleans and promised that an enquiry shall be held. It is reported that Government will indemnify the families of the men who were lynched. Rome, April 2. It is understood the secret societies threatened the King with their vengeance unless he adopted a bellicose attitude toward the United States on account of the lynching at New Orleans.
