Wreck of the S.S. Wanaka

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) New Plymouth, April 3. -There is. nothing fresh to report con- .- cerning the mishap to the Wanaka. : The work of salvaging the cargo of the Wanaka was kept going all yesterday, the^goods being transhipped to Mawhaki. ;■ As/the tide rose yesterday afternoon it became evident there was a hole in the bottom of the vessel for the water began to flow rapidly into her, and eventually put out the fires. Seeing there was no chance of getting the vessel off she was abandoned, and the crew paid off to-day. When the tide is out the place where the Wanaka was wrecked is only 300 or 400 yards from the shore. ;■ It is expected that as soon as the weather breaks up, signs of which are apparent now, the Wanaka will go to pieces, as she lies in a place where the swell in bad weather runs with great •; force. Boats are now hard at work clearing the vessel' of every thing on board. .. This Day. A heavy south-east gale was blowing las'; night, but did not damage the Wanaka wreck much. The Union Co.'s representatives who arrived last night have gone down to view the wreck. I Yesterday evening Charles Swan, second engineer of the Wanaka, N. Wood, first mate, J. Crottie and J. Johnston, whilst driving in from the scene of the wreck in a two horse buggy, the animals bolted and threw them all in Devon street. Swan's left leg was smashed, Wood's left knee injured, and the other two men were slightly hurt and bruised. The buggy was smashed and it was a miracle that all were nol killed. The two first named were taken to the Hosoital.
