The Midgets

There was a very large audience as" sembled last night in the Assembly Rooms to witness the performance of this really excellent company. Of course the greatest interest was centred in General and Mrs Mite, and the songs of the gallant ■ "officer were much appreciated. In order that every person present might form a good idea of their actual altitude, the General and his lady promenaded the length of the hall. Several of the audi- , ence entered into conversation with the General, and were much pleased with , his gentlemanly demeanour and intelligence. Canaris, the illusionist, next occupied the stage. As a prestidigiteur we do not believe a better has yet appeared . in the colonies. His tricks were neatly done, many of them being quite new to a Feilding audience. ■ His " patter " is clever, while a . slightly foreign accent j made it all the more. piquant. The singing of Miss Beaumont was much admired especially the song " Twelve months ago," which was accor c 1 an encore, when 6he responded with a cieerful ditty that elicited rapturous applause. The pianoforte accompaniments were played by Miss Spiller, of Wellington, a rising young 1 artist of twelve summers, who already poseesed a wonderful command of the in- : strument. There was a Matinee performance proceeding as we went to press this afternoon. The company will appear again to-night, and we can honestly . recommend every one to go. The show is genuine, and our commendatory remarks fall far short of ' the real deserts of the several performers.
