Correspondence
MR. HORNER'S REPLY TO MR. CHAMBERLAIN.
TO THE EDITOR OP TH K STAR. Sir, —l see in your issue of December 18th that Mr Chamberlain, in his attempt to clear himself from the awkward po&ition he has placed himself in by writing: to your paper on subjects which he knows nothing about, has sank deeper in the mire. If he would take my advice before he attempts to go into figures, to look up the rules of simple multiplication and ad^ dilion, as according to the way I wa» taught, 38 cubic yards 14 cubic feet at 64---per yard would amount approximately to 19s 3d and not 10s 11 as Mr Chamberlain says it would. He also states that a man should shift 50 or 60 yards of soil BimiJtir to that in question in one day which, according to over a dozen practical and experienced men, is simply ridiculous. As for Mr Chamberlain thinking I am grieved because he charges me with indifferent wardenship, I can assure him that he makes a big mistake, as I am far too tough in the hide for the feeble attack of Mr Chamberlain to have, the slightest effect. As for me meeting Mr Chamberlain to go and "sift the matter more thoroughly" it is useless, as I should never agree with his measurements and calculations. I will conclude this correspondence by refusing to answer any other letters on the subject. —l am, &c., F. HOBNEB,
