New Plymouth Murder
♦ | PEK UNITED PRKBB ASSOCIATION. I New Plymouth, October 20. Mr Samuel commenced his address for the defence at 9 o'clock and is expected to speak for four hours. The judge gave him permission to call a witness when the train comes in to rebut the evidence given by Inspector Pardy. Mr Samuel's address was interrupted by the arrival of a witness from Hawera named Mary Newland. She deposed to having had three interviews with Inspector Pardy respecting the fire in her hJuse in *New Plymouth, the first and third at the Police Office, and the second one at her son-in-law's. After the third interview she saw Mr Samuel, who took down what had transpired between her and. the Inspector before two justices of the peace. She had not seen the paper since or had an interview with Mr Samuel. At the interview with Inspector Pardy, after speaking about her fire, he told her what her son-in-law had said about what the accused wore, and asked her to sound him, and see if he contradicted himself, and to let him know, and he would try to give a favorable report about the fire, so as she could get her insurance. Inspector Pardy asked her to meet him with the answer at St. Mary's church, but she did not go. In cross-examination Mary^ Newland was examined as to her previous career and character. Many questions she refused to r answer. Mr Samuel occupied the Court all day with his address to the jury in the defence of the prisoner. The Court adjourned till 9 a.m. to-morrow, when Mr Fell, the Crown prosecutor, will commence his address. It is not probable the case will be decided before Wednesday.
