Boxing Day Sports

The meeting called for on Saturday sight in connection with the above was not very well attended by the general public. . This was owing to three reasons — first, the inclemency of the weather ; second, to the fact that these deservedly popular -sports are already firmly established in public esteem all over the colony; and third, the system of management has been so successful in the past that no fears are entertained as to the future. Of «oursethe "old identities "were represented, and nearly all the members of. the retiring Committee were there. Mr Lethbridge was voted to the chair, «nd stated the objects of the meeting. The minutes of the previous annual • meeting having been read and confirmed, the Secretary brought forward the Dalwhich read as follows : — IBai^ncb-sheet op Fkujmno Spohs, 1889. Beceipts!

Chaeles Beat, Hon. Treasurer. Hofcirli. SHERwn.fr, Secretary. On the motion ; of Mr Walter Bailey, {seconded by Mr E. Goodbehere, the bal-:ance-sheet was adopted. Mr Goodbehere considered that .the: item of Commission for selling the privileges was excessive, and he thought 2£ per cent was sufficient, seeing that the Committee took all •neks. - Mr Sherwill stated that when he held the position of auctioneer the privileges -were always disposed of gratis by himself for years. . - The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows : — Secretary, Mr "H- L. Sherwill; Treasurer, Mr C. Bray, senr. ; Handicapper, Mr J. E. Henry; Committee, Messrs Bray, Worsfold, Kirton, Haybittle, &oodbehere, Say well, F. ILethbridge, Gosling, Macarthur, Bailey, Moray and Hartgill, with. power to add to their number. The first meeting of the Committee -was decided to be held on Wednesday at Mr Sherwill's office. : Mr Haybittle suggested that the Committee should endeavor to make the Sports self-supporting, aB by the balancesheet it was evident that subscriptions were not necessary. The list showed that the same members always had to part, [the public encouraging them very little in the shape of subscriptions. Either the expenses ought to be curtailed or else the prizes. Perhaps if the Committee deemed it advisable to keep the gat * for themselves, they would derive something more than on the old plan, besides saving the commission charged by the auctioneer. Mr Goodbehere expressed himself in favor of the previous speaker's views, and thought that the time had arriyed when the annual meeting should be made selfsupporting. He was certain that with an «ntertainment on Boxing and race nights in the Assembly Booms all expenses could be met. The Chairman said that other institu fcions had an annual fee, and he contended that it should not be dropped, as when the Club were in funds a considerable amount of repairs were urgently needed. Promises of subscriptions should be obtained, and then left to the Committee if it was necessary or otherwise to collect them. Besolved, That the Assembly Booms be engaged for Boxing and Bace nights for entertainments in aid of the Sports Committee's funds. A vote of thanks to the chair brought the meeting to a close. Mr McLean, the Government Veterinary Surgeon, reports a Btrange mortality amongst the lambs in the Wairarapa district. Various theories have been put forth in explanation of the fatality. Strange to say the best fed and healthiest animals die oft* without any a j parent cause. Mr McL «an has forwarded a few specimens for microscopic investigation and his advice At the present is o avoid heavy feeding. The N.Z. Times says : —It is proposed to present Mr 6. D. Parnell, originator of the eight hours system m this Colony, with an illuminated address xn recognition of bis services to the cause of labor. Probably advantage, will be taken of the assembly of the working classes on A " Demonstration Day "to make the presentation, and some further and more lasting memorial^©! Mr ParnelTi -work is likely to be raised later on.
