4000 MEN ON THE GROUND. SUCCESS OF THE FIELD VEBY ENCOURAGING. (PEB UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, This Day. Large numbers are flocking to the Peak Hill diggings daily, and it is eeti. mated that there are now fully 4000 men on the field. The depth of sinking is only 130 feet in the prospectors' claim, and there is about 6 feet of wash dirt. Its width is at present unknown, but it is supposed to be considerable. 7 ounces of gold have been picked up in the wash dirt in pieoesjaveragingfrom a few pennyweights to 3 ounces. It is estimated that the washdirt will yield from 6 to 8 ounces per load. The country is pegged out for miles, and as a number of shafts will be bottomed during the week it is expected the value of the field will soon be settled. • Wellington, September 22 A number of miners who hare been out on strike arrived from the West Coast yesterday, en route for the Peak HilL gold rush, New South Wales. Several seamen on strike here have taken out tickets by the Monowai, which, sails for Sydney to -night, their destination being the scene of the rush. Dubbo is 278 miles from Sydney. The route is over the Blue Mountains, through Bathurst and Orange, and the second class single fare fronriSydney is 34s 6d.
