Tne representative mateh — Taranaki V Manawatu — played at i'rJ.murs,: i. List Saturday rebuked after a splendidly contested game, in a v ctory for the visitors by two tries to nil. Owing to our limited space we are unable to give a full report of the match, which was ileculedly the best of the season. The iirst spell play was all in favor of Manawatu, but the condition of the Taranaki men told in the second half, when they obtained 2 tries — Pearson (forward) obtaining one from a dribbling rush, and Hempton securing the other, having only one Manawatu back to pass. He had a straight run, and being very fleet of foot the local backs could not catch him until he was just over the line. Parr and Dyer all but scored on three separate occasions, the former making a splendid run, and was collared on the line by Taranaki's fullback. He also made a magnificent pot at goal, the ball falling six inches short of the bar. Dyer succeeded in getting over the line, but was carried back by some of the opposing players. The local forwaids were far superior to their opponents in tlie first spell, and held their own in the second. The victory was not a glorious one, and we consider it may be termed a " lucky win." The Taranaki team gave it as their opinion that Manawatu, with a little more combination and practice, would hold their own against any team in the colony, and that they were individually the beat men they had met during their tour.
