Another account of the Grenadier Guards' business is that the Duke of Cambridge stated that he was disgusted and ashamed of the Guards, and regietted that they wore tbe uniform of the Grenadiers. After twenty-five years' connection he disowned the battalion. When sentenced two of those convicted of mutiny threw then? medals across the parade ground. ■' •'• Mr E. Stanhope, Secretary of the War Department, has announced that Colonel Maitland will be reduced to half-pay. The Zambesi is to remain neutral. It is feared that Lord Salisbury will cede Blantyre, in the Shire district. The report circulated to the effect that Lord Randolph Churchill will rejoin the Ministry is untrue. Mr W. H. Smith denies that he is to be raised to the peerage, and says he will seek re-election for the Strand Diyision at the next general election. Scotland's share of the Licensing Fund is to be applied to the local rates, England and Wales's to the County Councils and Ireland's to education. - It is announced that Sir J. Fergusson, Political Secretary to the Foreign Office, marrieß Lady Downshire. The World states that although there are many aspirants to the Governorship of New South Wales, it is difficult to select a Governor who is likely to please tbe colonists. The New Zealand Estates Company's shares will be issued on Wednesday. The trustees are Sir John Gorst, Baron Schroeder, and Lord Henry Thynne. The articles of association will be signed on Tuesday. One million and a half 5£ per cent, debentures will be offered at 95, redeemable in 20 years, or at 103 if sooner. The 105 preference and ordinary shares are retained for the Bank of New Zealand. None of the debentures are now obtainable under par. The Globo assets will' yield a revenue of £117,000. A meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand will be held on August 28th. Mr Sandford Fleming, the Canadian engineer, appeals to Australia and New Zealand to support the Pacific cable. If owned by the Governments interested the tariff will be reduced to a quarter the present rates. The medical advisers of the Duke of Clarence and Mr H. M. Stanley report that their patients are doing well. July 22. Sir J. Fergusson, Political Secretary to the Foreign Office denies that Labuan Island has • been handed over to the British North Borneo Company or that it is the intention of Government to cede Gambia to France in exchange for Newfoundland. At the annual meeting of the Shipowners' Society, a general opinion was expressed that a further contest between the dock labourers and owners was inevitable, and it is believed that the owners will take united action and close their docks. Several of the speakers remarked that the action of the labourers was driving trade away from London to. other ports. . Tonquin, July 22. A commotion has been caused in China through an attempt having been made to poison the Emperor. Monte Video, July 22. The Exchequer is empty and the local loan has failed. The forced paper currency is a complete failure. Guetemala, July 22. San Salvador claims to have routed nine thousand Guatemala troops, and is advancing to besiege the capital. A serious outbreak of Asiatic cholera has occurred in a regiment of Goorkas stationed at Dharmaala. The death roll for two days numbered 42. St. John's. July 21. Sir W. Whiteway has expressedhis willingness to abolish the Bait Act on condition that the French withdraw the bounties on cod fisheries. Buenos Atbes, July 21. A number of officers have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in a plot to overthrow tbe Government. Tue arrest of leading officers continues. The cavahry have been detached, and are set off to watch the infantry, who are beto have been tampered with in the agitation which arises from, disaffection at the President's political and financial policy. The President promises reforms, and has agreed to summon a convention. The populace are greatly alarmed, and a semipanic has taken place on the local Exchange. The premium on gold has- advanced to 212. Berlin. July 21. Major Wiessman, owing to the state of his health, has applied to be placed on the retired list. Sofia, July 21. M. Stambouloff, the Premier, has offered, if the Porte will sanction Prince Ferdinand's appointment to the throne of Bulgaria, to place 60,000 troops at the disposal of the Sultan in the event of Turkey being attacked
