LATE CABLES.
By Electric Telegraph.— Copyrig|i^ I PER UNITED PBBBB ASSOCIATION. I Sydney, July 16. Lord Carrington inaugurated Arbor Day with some ceremony, and planted the first trees with his own hands. A special meeting of the Grand Lodge of New South Wales have unanimously resolved to extend recognition to the Grand Lodges for New Zealand and Tasmania. The wharf labourers refused to proceed with the unloading of the Tekapo and Jubilee this morning, in consequence of the adoption of a new practice, repugnant to the men, namely, engaging two Unionists to supervise their work. The wharf labourers assert that tinder the proposed new system only about half the usual number of men will be employed, and that in other ways owners are attempting under cutting. At a meeting of the Union this afternoon, it was resolved hot to work under the stevedores, and delegates were appointed to interview owners. The barque Zodiac,' from Kaipara to? Melbourne, bore into Camden Haven this morning, flying signals of distress. A passing steamer bound to Brisbane wen* to her assistance, transhipped her cargo* and proceeded on her Voyage. The barque was abandoned and afterwards drifted ashore. No further particulars are I to hand. O'Connor asserts his willingness to row McLean for £200 aside in three months. Replying to a question in the Assembly, the Postmaster-General said that the Government recognised the desirability of an alternative cable, and that they were now considering the matter, and would invite the attention of Parliament to it at ah early date. Mkdboukne, July 16. Mr Service was interviewed this morning by the unemployed. He promised to advocate the opening of relief works. The polioe have been instructed to disperse any processions in the streets. - Received July 17, 12.30 p.m. Sydney, This. Day. Upon the declaration of the Government to the representative of the Legislative Council, that they did not intend to start relief works for the unemployed : Councillors subscribed £500, which was handed to the Salvation Army unemployed fund.
