Brown, timber merchant, was broken into and an unsuccessful attempt made to open the safe. Last night Newsey, Light, and Co.'s grocers shop was entered through the window and a small sum in charge was taken from the till. A bout 250 applications for employment as lamplighters were received by the Chris tchurch Gas Company. Under tfre present arrangement ten lamplighters are employed. It is not certain how many will be required tinder the system which is to be introduced. Napibb, July 15. A peculiar case was heard in Court today, when Mr Cresswell, a solicitor, was sued for £20 paid to him, but which it was alleged he had not earned. A man named Johnson was arrested on twocharges of forgery. Mr Cresswell undertook his defence, -receiving in payment two promissory notes for £20 each. He appeared in the Resident Magistrate's Court in both cases, and in the Supreme Court defended the first case, in which Johnson was convicted. This being the* weakest case. Cresswell advised the prisoner to plead guilty to the second charge, but he refused, and Cresswell withdrew. The Resident Magistrate, after hearing the evidence, gate judgment in favonr of Cresswell.
