Pohangina Notes

There have been some splendid burns here notwithstanding the fact that the settlers started rather early, If they had exercised more patience ahd waited for the March winds they would have done even better. Now everybody ia hard at work sowing grass seed both in the Wanganui Harbor Board Block and the Foxton Small Farm Settlement. A good many people saved their own grass seed, a good thing for them seeing the price this year. The heavy rains We have had has given the country a grand appearance and the old pasture has grown wonderfully. There is a lot of worjt being done here in fencing, - both stab and wire, and the sound ofthe. axe and maul hammer is heard everywhere. The advantage of the good metailed road is much appreciated, it being a ! ; great convenience to everybody. There are nuiabers of sheep being driven up the river now on to sections of land about 12 •or 15 miles from: here/v Plenty of indivi- . duals are going up to look at the new 'block of land about tobe sold. Several new buildings are projected and in. course of erection.'- The potatoe crop is very heavy and 'people are already beginning to store them. ■ I hear there are several lots of bush already let to be felled during the coming winter. The contractor for the schoolteacher's .house has just started on the work. When completed it will be a great boon to the teacher and a great comfort to his family.
