A few days ago Mr Palmer, of this town, went up to the Otamakapua to commence operations on a section, taking with him a couple of horses to carry tents,, provisions, &c. All went merry as a marriage bell, and when he and his party came to a convenient clearing, one horse was turned loose -to graze, while the other was taken further into the forest, carrying the provisions. Coming on dark, a camp was made, the horse let loose, and the tent duly pitched on a convenient spot, and after a comfortable supper the adventurers went to slumber, lulled by the sweet voices; of the night, the occasional cry of the woodhen, and the gentle sound of falling water. Starting up in alarm he rushed out of the. tent, and to his horror discovered he was standing on the edge of o . precipice. Another look informed him chat his horse had fallen over, arid war lodged on a projecting shelf in the clifl two hupdred feet below.
