Mr John Magimty, of Wellington, was in Feilding to-day. We have to acknowledge receipt of a batch of Parliamentary papers from the Government Printer. We are desired by Mr Carthew to ac knowledge receipt of 10s from E.G., for the Dr Bernardo fund. It is probable that Mr Frank Lincoln, who is described as America's greatest humorist, will visit Feilding shortly. Bishop Harper tendered his resignation at Christchurch on Saturday, that being the 33rd anniversary of his consecration. Yesterday afternoon was observed a s a public holiday in Palmerston North to celebrate the opening of the local waterworks. The newly established Melbourne even, ing paper, the Standard, has already had a writ for libel seryed on it, claiming one thousand pounds damage. His Worship the Mayor invites the citizens of Feilding to keep the afternoon of Thursday next as a public holiday, on the occasion of the Hunt Club Race Meeting. The articles stolen from Mr S. Abrahams' pawnbrokmg establishment on Thursday night include watches, jewellory etc., valued at over £100. — Alanawatu Times. The correct cards for the Feilding Hunt Club's Steeplechase Meeting on Thursday next are now ready, and copies may be obtained from Mr W. Reading. The ladies and gentlemen who are to take part in the Football Concert on Thursday evening are reminded of the rehearsal in the Assembly Rooms this evening. It is intimated to-day that the Rangitikei Assembly Ball, which was fixed for September 6th, has been postposed till the 13th idem, in order not to clash with the Alexandra Cavalry Ball. A meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held on Saturday night to consider a proposal to join the Wellington Society. After full discussion from every point of view the proposal was decided to be declined. We regret to announce the death of Mr Alexander Mackenzie, of Duke street, who expired yesterday at the ripe old age of 89, after a short illness. The funeral will take place to-morrow, and the procession will leave his late residence at noon. Mr F. Pope is the undertaker. A man named George McGuire was charged to-day at the Police Conrt with being without visible means of support. He pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 24 hours imprisonment and to clear out from Feilding at the expiration of that time. Mess.'s Sherwill and Kirton, J.P.s, occupied the bench. The Australian opossum has been gazetted as game under the " Animals Protection Act, 1880." The opossum thriyes well in this colonj', and Mr Louis Holden has taken steps to procure a few pairs which he will liberate on his property in the Makino valley. We are informed, on reliable authority, that the hemp from Messrs P. and J. Bartholomew's naxmill, in Feilding, is the best made in the province of Wellington, and will consequently realise the highest market price in London, whence a shipment has been sent by direel. steamer. The R.M.Court will sit to-morrow. Telegraphic communication with Europe was re- opened to-day; but the news to hand are of no importance. Messrs Hill aud Poole will run the totalisator at the steeplechase meeting here on Thursday next. Mr M. O'Connor, of Terrace En< 7 , Palmerston North, advertises that he wants to purchase for cash, a quantity of oats and chaff. The owners of winners at the Marton Hunt Club steeplechase meetiug on Saturday, are reminded that their horses will have to carry a penalty of olbs. Tenders for additions to Mr A. MacDonald's house on the Awahuri Road, may be left at this office. They will close on Thursday afternoon at 5 o'clock. An Auckland policeman who went up to the " penitent form" at the Salvation Army Barracks last Sunday has been called upon for an explanation of his conduct by his superior officers. Captain Edwin telegraphed to-day : — Warnings for gales and rain after from 10 to 20 hours have been sent to all places north of Kaikoura and Hokitika, The prospects of the Charitable Aid Bill becoming law this session appear to be very remote, and it is improbable that the Government will take the Bill beyond its second reading, if it goes th«t far. Abundant ram fell in Hawkes' Bay last week, aud the Napier Telegraph says the gronud is getting the best soaking it has had for the last eight years. This ought to keep up the prices of sheep. We understand that the business of Messrs Fitzherbert and Matthews, barristers and solicitors, is increasing at Foxton to such an extent that they are having new offices erected in Main street, Foxton. A notice appears to-day stating Mr Samuels will, at the next meeting of the Oroua Licensing committee, apply for a publican's license for the Endymion Hotel. The Licensing Committee will meet at Sanson on the 7th prox. The " Own Correspondent" in Palmerston of the Wellington Post forwarded a garbled and very inaccurate report of the difficulty which occurred between the Palmerston and Feilding football teams pa. Saturday. This was the day of nomination for a member for No. 2 ward, Manchester Road District, and Mr James Purkiss, of Halcombe nominated by Messrs R. Lmton and W. Bell, being the only candidate, was declared duly elected by the returning officer, Mr H. L. Sherwill. Mr Ballance gave a lengthy speech in the House last night on the Property Act Assessment Bill, aud the House adjourned till 2.30 to-day, when the debate will be resumed. It is rumored that a direct noconfidence motion will be tabled as soon as the present debate is finished. We learn from the Pahiatua Star that the creditors of a bankrupt named C. E. Bickerman, who "scooted," have resolved to offer a reward of £10 for his apprehension, and that all expenses incurred in the proceedings should oe borne by the creditors pro rata. At the Gaelic Society in luverness, recently, a Highland factor exhibited a whisky bottle and glass used by the Munros of Foulis on rent days in the middle of the seventeenth century. The bottle holds fivo and a-half gallons and the glass two and throe-quarters wineglassfuls of whiskey. The sight caused much emotion — also disappointment, that the bottle was empty. The Feilding Brass Band played a selection, on the Rotunda, on Sunday afternoon, in exceptionally good style. Considering no notice had been given, and the weather was somewhat cold, there as a good number of visitors, amongst whom as expressed much ad miration of the music. Now that the Band has again started to perform out of doors it is to be hoped it will "keep it up" at not too long intervals. At the Primitive Methodist Church meeting last night, the pastor, Rev. Mr Harris, in giving the report spoke of the heavy burden of debt on the Church, amounting to .£IBO, which he hoped an effort would soon be made to wipe off. The Rev. Mr Tinsley, in reference to this, remarked that Palmerston being a progressive place they could beat them there in the matter of Church debts as well as .some other things, and his own Church could boast of a debt of .£BSO. Clara Francis gives the Prairie Farmer the following: —Boil the sheep's t< ngues in salted water, and when done, which will be in about two hours, skin them while still hot. For 50 tongues put a tablespoonful each of whole allspice and peppercorns, and half as many cloves into a small bag. Steep for 15 minutes in hot vinegar, then pack the tongues, with the bag of spice in the centre, in a stone jar ; pour over the hot vinegar and add enough more cold to cover them. They are very good eaten plain. A Nelson settler named Thomas, who resided at Waimoa Wost, close to the sea, left Nelson Haven about 4 o'clock on Sunday morning in a boat, together with his son-in-law named Haynes, the two intending two proceed home at daylight. The boat was discovered about a mile from the entrance, she having been cap sized. The night was squally and a heavy swell was running at the head of the Bay. Both men were married, and have families. The Rink will be open to-morrow, Sessions and prices as usual. Tenders are invited by the Engineer of the Kiwitea Road Board, Mr Bray, for certain works aa detailed in the advertisement. Mr Alfred Eade, cabinet maker, has a new advertisement in to-day, to wbich we commend all those who desire to furnish, or to replace any deficiencies. An alteration is made to-day in Mrs Halley's adyeitisement, by which it will be seen she has good stabling for horses at the Shamrock Boarding-house, Fergusson Street. So they are going to have another Sale of Drapery at Te Aro House, Wellington ! Yea ! that is easily seen from an announcement on the 3rd page, and there is no mistake about it. There will be some Wonderful Bargains to be picked up, and all tho Goods are new, freeh, aud seasonable at this sale of Winter Goods at Te Aro House, Wellington. It is a good thing we Country residents have such timely notice in this instance, and it will give us a chance as good as the City folks at being at the opeuing of this Winter sale on Thursday, the first of August, at Te Aro House, Wellington.
