The speiler fraternity are giving the police trouble. These gentry prowl around country race meetings, and by means of sharp practices of various kinds prey upon the unsuspecting and make themselves a nuisance generally. But this is not all. When business iv the sporting lino is dull they take to mild forms of burglary and theft, and give the police a great deal of trouble and cause the colony expense. The public have no money to spend in looking up these fellows, and we hold that they should be sharply dealt w tth. The root of the evil should be approached. If existing laws are not sufficiently elastic to suppress spoilers. They should be made so. As we (Christchurch Telegraph) have said of prize fighters, such men are nut wanted in New Zealand. Their residence here should be made bo uncommonly warm for them that they would be glad to give N*w Zealand a wide berth. — (We understand every precaution has been taken to protect the public on Thursday from these vermin.
