The Feilding Star will not be published on Tuesday next, Christmas Day. There is to be a dog show in Wellington" Mr Andrew Thomson was on a visit to Feilding to-day. We have to thank Messrs Cobbe and Darragh for two very beautiful pictorial almanacks. Captain Edwin telegraphs to-day: — Warnings for gales and rain have been sent to all places. A telegram from Paris states that thous* ands of people have undertaken to subscribe to the future Canal bonds. The services in St. John's Church on Christmas night will be at 7.30 instead of 7 o'clock as usual. We have to thank Mr Hartgill for press tickets for the Plantation Minstrels entertainment on Wednesday and Thursday. The Native footballers played a game at Llanelly (Camaerthenshire), Wales, on Thursday, and were defeated by a goal to nothing. Mr Edmund Goodbehere offers his sincere thanks to the burgesses of Feilding for the confidence reposed in him as shown by the result of yesterday's election. The Plantation Minstrels have had some very successful rehearsals this week, and the energetic director, Mr Hartgill, intends to provide a bill of fare that will satisfy everyone. We have to thank Mr Pirani, the Secretary of the Pahnerston Caledonian Society, for a complimentary ticket for their Sports on New Year's Day. Nominations for the Palmerston Sports close on Thursday next. The secretary of the sports will be in attendance at the Feilding sports on Boxing Day to receive entries. Cobbe & Darragh have opened up this week a grand assortment of Kaiapoi Clothing, which is well worthy of the attention of those requiring really good garments at reasonable prices. Day by day the outside public are becoming more and more convinced that the appointment of Mr Shannon as a Customs expert fills "a long felt want." People say the soft goods people " are giving themselves away" by howling so loudly. The licenses of all Native Interpreters expire on the last day of this month. No fresh ones will be issued, except to " persons of good repute," says the Government. We would have thought a knowledge of the language would also be necessary. At the annual meeting of the Local Court of Foresters the following officers were elected and installed into their respective offices : — Bro W. Wenham, C.E.; Bro G. Worsfold, S.C.R. ; Bro M. Belfit, S.W. ; P.C.R. Bro Porthouse, 1.W. ; Bro R. R. Collins, S.B. At the annual meeting of the Local Juvenile Foresters the following officers were elected and installed into their respective offices : — Bro A. Newman, C.R. ; Bro T. Holmes, S.C.R, ; Bro F. W. Foster, Secretary (re-elected) ; Bro J. Carrick, Treasurer ; Bro A. Toy, S.W. ; Bro G. F. Fowles, 1.W. ; Bro K. A. Foster, 5.8. ; Bro D. L. Foster, 1.8. The " break up" of the Feilding State School for the Christmas holidays took place at noon yesterday. It being the occasion of the severence of both Mr Dowling, head teacher, and Miss Lightbown, first assistant teacher, from the school, a very pleasing little ceremony was gone through. After a song had been sung, Mr Dowling gave a short address to the scholars, and wished them good-bye. Mr James then introduced Master M. Diamond who, on behalf of his fellow scholars, handed Mr Dowling a very handsome album Mr Dowling returned thanks, after which Miss Lightbown was made the recipient of two very nice lady's bags by her pupils. There were numerous bouquets, Christmas cards, &c, presented to the retiring teachers by pupils on their own account. Herbert Hankins, P.M- Treasurer; J. S. Jolly, Secretary ; G. Hanson, S.D. ; J. Salmon, J.D. ; A. J. Norberg. Organist ; J. Hocking, 1.G. ; J. Buchan, S.S. ; F. E. White, J.S. ; and T. Schlager, Tyler. In the unavoidable absence of Bro. J. P. Leary, his installation asD.M. was deferred till a subsequent meeting. — Manawatu Times We regret to state that the proposed half-holiday on Thursday next (Hack Race day) has fallen through, owing to one of the principal storekeepers refusing to sign the requisition. Messrs W. G. Haybittle, E. Goodbehere and H. L. Sherwill were appointed a committee at the last meeting of the Jockey Club stewards to deal with the matter. This morning they undertook to canvass the town for signatures, and succeeded in obtaining the consent of all the business people, with the exception of one of the principal storekeepers, as stated above, the result being that no half holiday will be observed by the business people of the Borough. Such a result is to be regretted.
