The Borough Elections

It will be seen, by the announcement of the Keturning Officer of the Boroxigh, that Mr Gould has been defeated, and Mr E. Goodbehere declared duly elected. We confess our disappointment, because we are convinced Mr Gould was not defeated on his merits. However, we must accept the inevitable. We have a word of explanation to make in this connection, as to the position we took up during this election. Our readers are aware that no reference was made in our columns to either Mr Lyne, who had retired, or Mr Goodbehere, who continued the contest. It is due to ourselves that we should now give the facts of the case. Mr Gould had published an address, and Mr Lyne had sent his to be put in type, but, of course, when he withdrew his candidature, the necessity for its publication- had gone past. It is needless to state that our columns were just as open to Mr Goodbeheee as to these gentlemen, and had he been desirous of taking the electors into his confidence, he could have done so, either by advertisement or by letter. As Mr Goodbehere did not see fit to do this we, as well *s the electors, were goite io the dari

as to whether he had any " views" at all. Therefore, it was impossible for us to say any thing for, or against, them. It has been said that we did not give Mr Goodbehere " fair play," but the foregoing should prove that he was only treated with the strictest journalistic etiquette.
