The police have received information from Tenui that the body of the man James Galbraitb, drowned iv the Obanga river on the 11th, has been recovered. An inquest is beiug held to-day. At Bliok's last week John, William, and Andrew Pitcher, runholders, of Ophir, were charged with stealing two heifers. Andrew was committed for trial and the others discharged. This Day. Mrs Gillies, mother of Judge Gillies, died this morning, aged 87. Auckland, October 22. Two young members of the City Guards on Saturday afternoon set up a kerosene tin on Surrey Hills estate and began firing at it with rifles at a distance of 500 yards. A bullet whistled ps«t a gentleman walking in the vicinity, then penetrated the wall of a house, smashing some things in tbe kitchen. The offenders will be dealt with under the Police Offences Act.
At the half-yearly general meeting of shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand to-day, Mr Boardman will vote in the direction of abolishing the qualifica tion of auditors, so that shareholders may be enabled to elect auditors whether they are shareholders or not.
A gold prospector named Frederick Bourke has been accidently killed at Waikoriraako, Corcmandel. He had gone out to fetch water, and not returning, search was made when he was found in a creek with his head cut dreadfully. He died several hours after.
This Day. Hayter and McMahon were brought hefore the Court in connection with the outrage at Onehunga waterworks, and remanded. It is alleged that on two pre* vious occasions deliberate attempts were made to destroy the reservoir, iv one case the bottom being injured apparently by the explosion of djnamite.

Very heavy rain fell to-day and yester day. The river in consequence is con siderably swollen and the bar in impnss able.
A robbery of a race ocourred a few days ago nenr New River, and four months' work was stolen.
