Our Small Farm Association

(by a correspondent.)

I have been once more on a.pilgrimage to the grounds of the above, and am thankful to get back without being drowned, or buried in the mud; If the Government wish to be fully persuaded of the desirability and necessity of making roads to and through a bush block previous to sale or settlement, then I would strongly advise them to hold a meeting of Ministers on the Feilding Block during midwinter. The silent eloquence of flood and mud would settle the question. Your correspondent does not intend to undertake the journey again, at thi» time of the year, unless specially invited to accompany the Governor or Minister of Lands. The appointment of an Inspector of Improvements ia the moon would be just as consistent as to send him to see after work in such an unapproachable place. I must admire his discretion, if not his fidelity, in carrying out his functions by correspondence or telescope, instead of in person.

In spite of the great obstacles to transit or travel, there is a deal of work being done on the block. There is a cheering report that Government has granted money to improve the tracks— let us hope it is true. There is a feeling amongst the pioneers that the Palmerston, Feilding, and Wanganui Blocks should be formed into an independent Eoad District, thusenabling them to borrow for road making. Every visit I make to the locality deepens my conviction that there is a bright future to be worked out for it. While the drawback* are only temporary, the elements of sue* cessful settlement are permanent.
