The Horticultural Society

■ ♦ The Secretary of the Feilding Horticultural Society, Mr Edmund Goodbeo here, has called a meeting, at his office this evening at eight o'clock, of all persons interested in horticulture, to arrange the shows for the coming season. It is not our intention to dilate on the invariable excellence of our exhibitions of fruit, flowers, and vegetables, as that is a fact so well known on this coast that further remark is needless. What we have no # to do is to urge gardeners or florists to make their preparations with all convenient despatch. This season promises to be favorable to the cultivation of exhibits, and they will have a grand opportunity of being shown to the best advantage in the new theatre, attached to Mrs Hastie's Hotel, which will be completed aud opened before Wednesday, the sth of December, on which day it is proposed to hold the Spring Show. The part to be played by those of the public who are unable to assist as exhibitors, but are desirous of being patrons of so useful an institution, is to support it liberally, either by becoming subscribing members or donors of special prizes. But there is another very important part they should take in the affair, and that is to attend at the meeting to-night to elect officers, and arrange for the organisation of systematic canvassing and Managing Committees. Without these a great deal of unnecessary work is thrown on the Secretary ; aud, too often, a lot of really useful work is left undone, to the actual monetary loss of the Society.
