The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 1888. The Markets

The steady and increasing demand for New Zealand produce in the English and Australian markets is very gratifying. We find that in London the wheat market is very unsettled and a speculative tendency prevails. N.Z. long oerried is quoted at from 37/6 to 38/6 ; Australian, 37/- to 38/3. N.Z. frozen mutton is selling at 5d to to s|d per lb; lamb, 6£d; tallow, good mutton, 26/- to 26/6 ; beef, 23/6 to 24/- per cwt. ; hemp, from £26 15/- to £27 per ton. The English hop crop is expected to be 40 per cent, below that of last year, and the quality will be under the average. In Sydney the drought has created an extraordinary demand for potatoes, oats, bran, and pollard, while imported butter is selling at 1/3 to 1/4 with an upward tendency for prime samples. The demand for sheep to supply the frozen meat trade has caused prices to advance firmly at each succeeding auction sale, and where these have seemed below the market rate it has only been when the animals were " culls and scrubbers." The wool market promises to be equally favorable, and recent quotations be maintained aud probably augmented. The value of great cattle is also advancing and there is now every probability that beef will be quoted at 17/6 per cwt. before many weeks are passed if prevent indications of a rising market may be trusted. Altogether the outlook for farmer is very hopeful, and we trust that our most sanguine expectations regarding a rise of prices will be fully realised.
