Waituna Notes

[from our correspondent.] On Saturday evening last a meeting of householders was held at Mr Murray's residence for the purpose of considering the best steps to be taken to get another school in this district. There was a very good attendance, Mr Wallace presiding. The gentlemen who had been reported to canvass the ' district, reported that there were now thirty children of school age, which number would be increased by the addition of the families of several settlers who were expected to take up their residence here in a few months. : None of the children included in the list reside within three miles, by public road, of the school already estab- ! lished. As regards a site for the proposed new school building, Mr Northcott offered a choice of two acres of land ; one about four miles, and the other about four and three-quarter miles from the present school, the selection to be made by the Education Board, Wanganui. This offer was gratefully accepted. It was resolved to make the necessary application to the Board as soon as the question of guarantee of the new teacher's salary and other matters of detail were settled. This settlement has had quite a busy appearance lately, a great number of visitors having been up to look at the place, while others have been passing through en route for the West Waitapu Block. The soil of the new block is reckoned first-class, but the country is rather broken in some directions. Work is plentiful, and bushmen are enquired for. I hear capital accounts of the lambing this season, the weather being very favorable.
