Frozen Mutton Report
-«. Messrs Nelson Bros, (Limited) report (Napier Telegraph) as follows : — Since our last report prices as for frozen meats have been well maintained, and for very prime carcasses of New Zealand mutton even improved, best Canterbury sheep having in a few instances made 5d per Ib, a figure which has not been touched for many months past. "Average qualities of New Zealand have been making 4£d per 1b the. The arrival of the " Oroya" with 6,000 carcasses of mutton from Sydney, which were promptly placed on the market, has had some slight effect in reducing sales of New Zealand, as contractors who had taken orders based upon values of a taw weeks back were glad to meet with a satisfactory quality of mutton at a lower price ; and in addition to this, many cutting butchers find the Sydney sheep very suitable for the trade. The lamb trade is very slow. Hitherto supplies have been short, so that good carcasses have made fairly satisfactory prices— averaging fully 6d per Ib. It is probable however, that this price will not be maintained when the heavy arrivals per " Doric" and " Kaikoura" are placed on the market. Frozen beef is rapidly finding favor with buyers, and has well maintained the values reported in our last. Special attention should be given by owners to the wrappers used for this beef, as the present material is too thin and does not protect the meat. Buyers expect a reduction of Id to 2d per otone if the meat is soiled.
