Fowler's, Birmingham Small Farm Settlement

♦ [from our correspondent.] Business here is looking very well, _nd the settlement is making rapid progress, aud the same may be said of the adjoining blocks. A lot of bush is being felled, and the land cleared, so that there ia not a man about who has not abundance of work at good wages. Although we are but newly on the ground the Dog-tax Collector has found ua out. He has been up here twice, and each time he has come on the Sabbath day. Now, as that is particularly a day of rest in .young bush settlements, we do not like it. The people in this locality, have, great objections at any time to pay this tax, but it becomes _oubly objectionable when they are disturbed for such a purpose during a period set apart for religious observances. Ido not know whether we are legally liable for this tax, as we have not yet been rated, and will be ' obliged if you, Mr Editor, will en- [ lighten, us on the point. I noticed in ' the letter of a correspondent of the . Marton paper, he makes fun of our : -cabbages, besides being a little spite- 1 ful. I fancy envy has a good deal to < <do with it. : £There can be no doubt that the Dog- j tax Collector has been legally ap- j pointed, and owners of dogs must . | pay. They should also note that j the Collector is not obliged to call i on them at all; they are supposed to ' apply to him to have their dogs I registered ; or, in default, may be J fined a sum not exceeding five pounds.— Ed. F.S.] \
