The county team went first to the wickets, and scored 92 for a loss of six wickets, when play was stopped by the rain. News received from Japan state that it is estimated fully one thousand persons perished by the recent volcanic eruption in that country, and that great excitement still prevails there. At Westminster Abbey to day a memorial, erected to the memory of the late Right Hon. W. E, Forster, was unveiled. In the course of an address on the occasion, Lord Knufsford dwelt on the interest ever displayed by the deceased statesmen in the welfare of the colonies. St. Petersrurg. July 30. j During the proceedings held to celebrate the introduction of Christianity into Russia, the Governor of Kieff, where the principal ceremonies took place, dropped dead while reviewing the troops. Rome, July 30. The Pope is confined to his bed with liver complaint. The betrothal of the Duke Avsta, ex King of Spain, to his niece, the Princess Letitia Buonaparte, is creating great scandal and the action of the Pope in granting the dispensation for the marriage is condemned. Sydney. This Day. The victim of the Blacktown murder is named Morris, who was formerly a digger in New Zealand, and was reputed to be well off. It is suppose d the quarrel was over the wages of the Chinaman whose name is Hing Loong* who struck Morris a terrific blow ou the head with a tomahawk. The latter's wife was severely hacked about the arms when endeavoring to separate the men. During the struggle the Chinaman was desperately wounded and lies in a critical state. The Maritime Council decline to allow the transhipment of exhibits for tbe Melbourne Exhibition by the Mariposa,
