On Vaccination

» Mr Christopher Gaustad, of Halcombe, has entered the lists against vaccination as a preventive of small pox. He has been at considerable pains to collect information and opinions, chiefly from foreign authorities with, to us, unpronounceable names, and has published the result in a closely printed and voluminous pamphlet, the first part of which he has kindly forwarded for our inspection. Mr Gaustad claims to have studied medical science for sixteen years, though there seems to have been some hitch that prevented his obtaiuing a qualification as a result of his labors, and therefore the columns of medical publications beingr closed to him, he appears determined, with commendable pluck, to pay for his own printing. The subject has been argued and written about until it is threadbare, and the action taken by the various governments has been the result, not of opinion or assertion, but statistical information that could not be controverted. Occasionally, we regret to say, carelessness in selecting lymph, or accidental causes, have given grounds for a strong feeling against it but our space being limited and our proclivities not professional, we must decline entering into an exhausdiscussion on the subject, though l^fciosfc liberal arrangements shall be open if Mr Christopher Gaustad likes to advertise either his publication or its contents.
