Tne Ransitikei Royal Bifles will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the corps by a ball ou Fiiday the 13th instant. *Xhe officers of the various corps in the district have been iuvited. Notice has been given by Mr Valentine to ask the Minister of Defence, Whether in view of the interruption of telegraphic communication with Europe, and the possibility of war being imminent, he intends taking steps for the purpose of ascertaining the state of preparation the Colony is in for meeting the emergency of a sudden attack upon our shores by a foreign Power ? Also, whether he has any iutention of arming our Permanent and Volunteer Forces with arms of greater precision and usefulness than are supplied at present to these forces. — N.Z. Times. The officers of tke Wellington Volunteer corps are going: to entertain the members of the Legislature at dinner on Monday e vailing at the Club Hotel. Mr Valentine is going to ask the Premier if Volunteer uniform clothing has not been inadvertently excluded from the free list in the Customs Duties Bill, and if so excluded by accident will he take measures for removing the import duty of 25 per cent, which has now been imposed, and permit such articles to enter free as heretofore ?
