A Surpnse
" Telemachus," in the Australian tells the following good story: —l will not say what jeweller's shop it was, but I daresay if you walked up and down Collins street once or twice you would pass it. At any rate B. know it very well. He was in there the other day, atd had just selected a handsome and very expensive diamond ornament, which he said he »vould pay for at once; instead of letting it go in the account and was making out the cheque for it when he heard a wellknown voice exclaim behind him: "Oh, Mr 8., how delighted dear Mrs B. will be with that lovely pendant. What a good husband you are! How I wish mine were like you I" and turning round he saw his wife's particular crony and bosom friend, whose, eyes sparkled with malice as she addressed; him. ~8. muttered something rather incoherent in reply; but took the diamonds home,- and Mrs B. tells everybody of the delightful surprise that her husband gave her. But the husband had been surprised beforehand. •
