The Wanganui Absconder
♦ ■. — The defalcations of the absconder Eyre are, it is said, far greater than at first anticipated. It was reported in town that the amount of bis deficit in; the Pemberion Small Farm Association totals up to no less than" £1057, and "that two widows are victimised to the tune of £500 £100 respecti »ely, moneys trusted to Ejre tor investment. "Surely he will not be allowed to get off scot tree. It is said that in cases of this kind the Govern* raent always insist on those who hare been duped undertaking the prosecution of the delinquent at their own cost. If this'be insisted on in Eyre's case, it is more than probable that he will escape punishment; as his defrauded clients have lost quite enough monej by him, and will hardly care to go to any expense in the matter of a prosecution. It is to be hoped that the Government will instruct the police to take steps to have Ejre brought back and punished-, a» it would never do to let «ueb. dislmnesty escape its proper penafty, and thus encourage men like Eyre to bolt with all they-could lay hands upon without fear of being'arrested m another country, — Chronicle. ,
