The Chinese Question

Preparatory to tindeparture of the Menmuir on Saturday, two of the Chinese escaped, notwithstanding the precautions made by the Customs, who refused to clear the vessel unless the number of passengers were accounted for, or had paid the fine of £50 each and poll t.x. After this Was complied with the vessel left, taking 34 back to Hong Kong who were brought to tbe colonies. The Government have decided to em* force tbe section of the Chinese Restriction Act of 1881, which precludes vessels from bringing more than one Chinamen to every hundred tons under a penalty of £100 a«head, and ship owners are to be notified that such enforcement will be enforced after to»day. May 28. The Changsha has a number of Chinese passengers for New Zealand; Three are booked for Lyttelton, 43 for Grey, mouth, 5 for Dunedin, and 9 for Wellington. Melboubne, May 28. Arrangements are now nearly completed to hold the Chinese Conference about the middle of June, the general feeling of the several Governments being in favor of the Conference meeting in Sydney:- The actual date of the meeting is not definite j fixed, as it is not known , when the New Zealand delegate will arrive.
