The vestry of St. John's, Boslyn, hay» ing made certain representations to the incumbent with respect to ritualistic observances, and having held several meetings without any satisfactory result, seven out of the nine vestrymen and the two churchwardens have resigned their seats, and presented a petition for a parish meeting to consider tne whole question. Taupo. May 28. Tongariro is now more active than it has been since the outburst of 1869. Huge columns of smoke vapour is rising from its most active cone, Ngaruahoe. On a fine day the sight seen from Taupo is quite imposing. The recent earthquakes may have some connection with the increased activity. Blenheim, May 25. A discovery of gold is reported a taut midway between Blenheim and Picton, in a gully leading from the Mahakipawa to Speed's Valley. The gold is nuggety and of splendid quali'y. Auriferous in« dications are said to have been traced a distance of seven miles. The Warden today granted a special claim three and a quarter miles in length al.ng the Wakamarina river to Mr S. J. MacaJister, conditionally on a Company being formed with a capital of not less tban £20,000, and that £3.000 worth of plant be placed on the ground and 40 men employed within nine months' time. It is believed that this is the largest special claim yet granted in the colony. It is proposed to dredge tbe river. . GrsYMOUTH, May 28. At the cattle sales to-day the market was glutted. It has been remarked that since the stoppage of the public works m the dis'rict oily two-thirds of the cattle formerly sold are now required. 105 head of cattle were offered altogether ; 70 were sold, the average price being £7 ; prime beef, heavy weights, 17a 6d per. lOOlbs ; lighter weights, to 20f per lOOlbs. Of fat sheep there was a short supply ; only 200 were penned 140 crossbred wethers from the Christchurch road averaged 13s 3d ; 50 Wanganui ditto 14s 9d. Auckland. May 28. Mr D. L. Murdoch, who recently returned from a visit to England, resigns his position as general manager of the i Bank of New Zealand at the end of May. Pamtsrston Ths Day. i A public meeting last night resolved j against the proposal Jo sell the Town Hall site to liquidate the overdraft- It turns out the overdraft is within the legal limit, and can be easily liquidated shortly, It is also probable that a half penny general rate only will be required for this year, and that even a farthing rate may ' suffice. i | The elections for the new Counoil are i being held to day.
