The Recent Earthquake in China

Some particulars are to hand of the great earthquake in China. It appears that the shocks began at 6 in the evening of December 15 in the Wanngni district of Yunnan, and were felt over a large part of the Province. The disturbances continued at irregular intervals for four days. The district capital Was reduced to a mass of ruins, scarcely a house escaping. Over 5000 persons are said to have been killed in the falling buildings, many being buried in the ruins, while the number of injured is described as too large for computation. At the prefectural city of Lam On the effects were scarcely less disastrous. Here an enormous chasm opened in the earth,' and water of a red color was ejected. To the north, in the Szechuen Province, at Lochan, where 10,000 persons are said to have perished, a striking change took place in the surface of the country, a large tract of land being swallowed up and the surface changed into a lake.
