Birmingham Small Farm Settlement

[from our own correspondent."]

A meeting of the Birmingham Small Farm Association was held at. Mr T. Lowe's Hotel, Fowler's, on Thursday last. The principal business was relative to the disposal of the suburban sections. After discussion it was resolved to cut them up, and draw for them by lot. A good deal of adverse criticism was passed on the Government for not returning the thirds to the Association thus delaying the making of roads, &c. Things are rapidly becoming civilised and settled here, and as an instance of the progress being made, I may mention th it one of our most influential settlers was seen the other day walking about under an umbrella. The Feilding Small Farm Blook is also going steadily along. They have j got a local sawmill, and I hear the proprietor has been favored with an order to saw sufficient timber for a bedstead. It is not much, but still small beginnings make large endings. With reference to tKe " thirds," a Wellington correspondent in the Wanganui Herald writes : — " Two Government supporters think there has been culpable delay in not paying over the thirds to Special Settlement Associations. The Treasurer tried to get his colleague out of difficulty by representing there was a hopeless muddle in the departments over the accounts. Viva Eed Tape !"
